Insulted by Bias

"Will girls imitate the new, kickass heroines in the Japanese anime Cardcaptors?"

Wow. I feel personally insulted. As much as I loath the dubs, CCS is definately not one of the 'violent media' that can be paralleled with Doom. A bit forced, I'd say. Wow. Sometimes I wonder if the articles are written not based on the author's belief, but by the need of having some opposition articles on there.

  1. Heh, it's password-protected so I had to go look for the article through the aragon library website. :/

There are plenty of violent anime, even if Card Captor Sakura is not one of them. Seems more like the result of "Hm...I heard annie-may was violent...I wonder what annie-may is. Maybe I'll ask my daughter if she watches any annie-may."
And everyone knows girls don't play doom or quake, so when looking for something that applies to them, it's not like you can just use Ninja Scroll or something as an example; it was that or Sailor Moon.

  2. Uh... What? "Everyone knows girls don't play doom or quake..."

Okay, so no, i don't play Doom, and i don't even know what Quake is, but i'm sure there are girl gamers who do who'd be offended to read that...

So before i run off on a girl-gamer-tangent about what i or Bernice or Kat (or whoever else...) play/played...

Haha, true enough, i guess -- "it was that or Sailor Moon." But what about Power Rangers? Pokemon? CCS isn't really violent, is it? It's about magical cards..? and stuff? o_O

Then again, i didn't bother reading the article yet... is it imperative that i look at it now? o.O

  3. They can go ahead and be offended because there are 50x as many male gamers who agree with me? Anecdotal examples are nice and all, but it's not enough to point at a select group of people, you need to consider the overall population, for which my characterization is pretty much accurate...

But yeah, I had totally forgotten about Slayers. If they want an example of a maniacally violent and sadistic female role model, it's 500x better than card captors.

No, they'd look at Slayers if they wanted an example of a bad anime. Though... Sailor Moon is probably worse. I dunno if CCS is really better actually. Hmmm... women only watch bad anime? :P

  5. Umm... OBVIOUSLY that is an incorrect generalization/assumption/statement that has a question mark attached to it.

  6. Slayers is classic. Where else would you find magic and dragons and swordfights and evil demon spirits and all that stuff? And Lina Inverse and the Dragon Slave are iconic. There's even a Lina character in DotA.
Doesn't have to be good. Bleach isn't that good, and it's popular because it has magic and swordfighting and demons and stuff. Gundam Wing wasn't that good, but it had the coolest-looking giant fighting robots, and etc.

    Hm...yeah...CCS is bad. Reference: http://www.tragicalmirth.com/senseless/edtomoyo.htm
As for generalizing that...I dunno. I understand Sailor Moon to be more or less equivalent to Power Rangers (Always beat the bad guy sent by the main villain from their impregnable fortress, always win in the same way, always takes them exactly 30 minutes, and always learn an "Important Life Lesson" from it.)

Bleach isn't that bad... It's still better than Slayers. Also, I think DBZ might qualify as more of a "classic" I mean... it's a horrible anime, but who hasn't seen it? Also, being in DoTA doesn't mean anything... Though, eh.. fine I guess it is sorta classic. Still bad though.

  8. Stop hating, Jeff. Where else are you going to find dragons? Fafner may be named after a dragon, but I have yet to see one. Dragonball series is the only thing I can think of. So considering the competition...

  9. Who's hating now?

And now that I have time to read this...I find most of these "quite offensive and disagreeable" (quote Amy) and think they're horrible generalizations.

    Slayers aren't all bad, and only speak of CCS iff (if and only if) you've SEEN the whole thing. Seriously. And what does that link/staff editorial has to do with anything? >_>;;

And as for Fafner...just because something is named after a dragon doesn't mean that thing has to be a dragon. Just because a volkswagon beetle is named a beetle doesn't mean it has to be a beetle...And it's the mythology that they borrowed from...

SM, PR: See the world from more than one perspectives, people. They're for little kids. Of course the plot must be simple and bad guys always lose.

And SM, CCS are more 'magical' while PR is more physical/mecha violence.

And I take offense for Jeff's comments on how women only watch bad anime. Does this mean NARUTO's bad? And just because YOU don't like shoujo doesn't mean it's bad. (Not saying guys don't watch shoujo because they do)

  10. Lol. Taking Jeff seriously, even though he CLEARLY put a ":P" at the end of his comment to let people know it was sarcasm?

I know they're for kids. I've watched both when I was in elementary school. I was just remarking that every episode was exactly the same, which even back then I found made it dull rather quickly.

Watching all of CCS doesn't seem that feasible (like 100 episodes and n movies?), unless you were keeping up with it while it was actually on TV. So I base my generalizations on random snippets. And the article WAS funny...wasn't it?

I'm in the middle of episode 5 of Fafner, and I have yet to see any mention of dragons. Not that I'd expect to see a real dragon in mecha anime, but I was hoping Fafner itself would be in the style of Shenlong Gundam or something.
